What is a Baby Monitor?
A baby monitor is simply a radio transmitter set to a fixed
frequency which emits an FM (Frequency Modulation) signal
when switched on. These monitors transmit signals at fixed frequencies,
typically these are in the range of 49,830-49,890 MHz.
Why do I need one?
Baby monitors allow you to keep tabs on your child without
having to stand vigil outside your child's door. The baby monitor is composed of
two parts, a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter needs to be positioned
within 8-10 feet of your babies crib (closer the better) in order to pick up any
sounds from your baby. The signal is then sent to the receiver which can be
carried around the house by parent and still receive any sounds from your baby. The
transmitter ususally plugs into the socket as its stationary next to your baby whilst the receiver
takes batteries because its mobile.
What are the Drawbacks of Baby Monitors?
1) Firstly, baby monitors work effectively between ground and
first floor rooms, however if the house contains aluminium siding or thick
concrete walls then this can reduce the transmitted signal.
2) Secondly, there has been reports of parents being able to
pick up neighbours babies on their receiver therefore it is advised not to
mention any private information whilst the baby monitor is on.
3) Cordless phones often interfere with the signal of the
baby monitor.
